Taking its name from the original ‘State Forest 42’, the ‘T42 Central Plateau’ event is based on a historic logging route which presents challenging terrain through pristine native forest and awesome canyon valleys in New Zealand’s Central Plateau region.
What’s great about this event?
The 42 Traverse Track is known to many mountain bikers as one of the (if not the) best single day bike trails in New Zealand! The T42 offers the perfect weekend getaway opportunity with event registration and the post-event aftermatch party both located at The Park Hotel in National Park.
The 48km MTB and 42km marathon events begin on a private Landcorp deer farm with fast farm sections under the shadow of the trio of Mt Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. The 42nd Traverse track is stacked with variety including bridges, technical sections, canyon views and a handful of short river crossings. A testing 24km run/walk challenges the hardiest of trail runners and walkers while the 11km and 6km run/walk options weaves through native forest trails surrounding the township of Owhango and providing stunning views of the Whakapapa River.
Some of the many highlights of the T42 weekend experience:
- Venturing off the grid and safely exploring a very remote New Zealand forest
- Very long, steady and exciting downhill sections
- The post-event celebration at The Park Hotel, Ruapehu!
The T42 has earned a reputation for offering a genuine point-to-point adventure, not overly technical and offering plenty of never-ending downhills … coupled with a great finish line atmosphere at the picturesque, historic Owhango Domain, delicious local fare and a legendary aftermatch party, it’s little wonder that this event remains a popular day out or weekend away.

What people say about the Total Sport events
Our first Coastal Challenge and our group loved it! Such a great day out and something for the whole team!
What an awesome event – thank you so much for putting on such a totally mad event with such an incredibly supportive atmosphere. I cannot remember how many times someone offered me a hand over a rock – and so of course in turn I did the same for those behind me.
“What a happy event! The atmosphere was exciting and so welcoming.”
