Louise Bull from Devonport returned to office work three years ago and has never spent so much time sitting: long days at work and being the “Mum” driving, and cheering from the side line.
Louise read about the DUAL Scholarship programme when she received a newsletter from her insurer Partners Life and recognised it as an opportunity to get off the side line and into the action.
“I ride my electric bike from Devonport to the ferry across to work most days, which gives me some movement and fresh air, but I wouldn’t really call it exercise,” she says.
“I have a few old sports injuries which are exacerbated by so much sitting, and the effects of middle age seem suddenly noticeable.”
Louise was selected as one of 15 participants on a $1500 scholarship programme designed to help her get fit for the DUAL which will take place on 25 March 2017.
“I didn’t really think I’d be selected for the programme, but I’m delighted. It is a wonderfully supportive way of getting back into outdoor activity and getting over the fear of injuries. The programme is holistic and now that I am part way through I see that it encourages resetting daily patterns in healthier directions. It is all good!”
The DUAL Scholarship Programme includes weekly group training, a personal trainer, nutrition advice, online support, exercise gear and the entry fee to the Partners Life DUAL event on Rangitoto and Motutapu islands on 25 March 2017.
Director Aaron Carter from Total Sport says that the scholarship was designed to help people who really wanted make a total lifestyle change, and get fit and healthy – both mentally and physically.
“Total Sport has a simple mission: to get more people outside and enjoying participating in more events in the wonderful locations New Zealand has to offer,” he says. “The DUAL is no exception.”
